As a counselor, you and your co-counselors are responsible for the safety and happiness of your campers. Every child stays for the full summer, so you’ll develop a strong bond with your campers.

As a previous counselor once said, “At first all I could do was wonder how I was going to make it through an entire summer living with fifteen 12-year olds. And now, I’m wondering how I’m going to make it through the next 10 months without them.”

A good camp counselor has a trying job, but one that they gain from immeasurably. We have had many young professionals tell us they use more of what they learned from their summers at camp than anything school has taught them.

Orientation

Every counselor must attend a 6-day training course before campers arrive. You’ll learn what to do and how to handle the job. Orientation will cover topics like leadership, homesickness, accident prevention, bullying and more. Here you’ll get a chance to meet the entire Camp Nock-A-Mixon staff and have your questions answered. At Camp Nock-A-Mixon there will always be someone there to help guide you through the summer.

Schedule

On regular schedule days, which are about half the days of camp, you’ll follow a schedule given to you during orientation. In the 5-period day, you’ll have 4 work periods and 1 off period. The periods you work will be based on your skills and interests, which you will help us determine during the interview process. The non-regular schedule days will differ depending on what the special event or out-of-camp trip is for the day.

Time Off

Each counselor gets 4 off days over the course of the summer. Each off day is 30 hours long – starting at 6pm and ending at midnight the following day. There is also a personal day built into the schedule which can be used if you are sick, have a job interview, funeral, doctor appointment, etc. If you do not use it during the course of the summer, you’ll be able to take it towards the end of camp.
